Ok, so not really. It’s not like I have much of a social life anyway. I have a 9 month old daughter… need I say more? For me, being able to stay up late enough to watch Saturday Night Live is getting “crazy.” I recently had two Rock Band weekends in which I was up past midnight… I could barely function the next day! Not because of the many gin and tonics (ok partially) but because this little princess can’t handle “real people” anymore.

I mean seriously. There was a time when I go out into the real word and interact with human beings. Now, I come home, feed my daughter, play with her for a while, put her down, then hop on the computer. I have some amazing books I’d like to read (which I’m slowly making my way through). I’d like to actually work out. I need to practice the guitar. Maybe even go out to dinner now and then? But no… no! What do I do? I download Digsby which allows me to IM, twitter, facebook, etc. all in one place. What am I a moron?!? Apparently so.

I was getting so many pop-messages: so and so is now idle, him and haw changed their status, yo mama twittered something really stupid, some Facehole superpoked you, so and so is no longer idle. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh And my ADD brain couldn’t NOT look at the pop-ups. Luckily Digsby allows you to change a lot of those settings, so I finally have it limited to the important stuff (That guy you are stalking has just signed on) hehe.

I feel so weird knowing all the things I know about people. Like once, I knew that a friend of a friend was in Seattle because the person she was with Twittered about it and I was following him. Too much! Do I really need to know all that? Do I really need to know that YouKnow WhoYouAre, just checked in at 1234 Boulder Ave? Freaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkyyyyyy And yet… I check in. I answer “what are you doing right now” (duh, writing this blog). I update my status.

But who gives a shit? Who reads that stuff? Is anyone really even out there? What is this internets stuff anyway. haha Ok sorry… cracking myself up. I’m not a perfect blogger ok. In fact I suck.

But how do I stop? That is… if I wanted to! Is there some sort of support group? I won’t even go into the other many social media sites I belong to. Perhaps the better plan is to suck it up and go with the flow?! Really… quit bitching. This may be the only way to get a date (yea I’m single boys!). *sigh*

Hi. My name is Jen and I’m a geek.

As a software developer, one would think that I would have realized this long ago. But it has only been recently that I’ve begun to accept my geekness. For YEARS I have claimed to be a non-geek. I thought I was too cool. That being a geek was such a horrible thing. But, my friends (or myself since I’m the only one to read this), I’m here to claim that I’m actually quite proud to be a geek.

I believe my initial negative reaction to “geek” was that I had it completely confused with “nerd”. I know… I know… I’m not going to go into some long dissertation on the differences between a nerd and a geek. If you’re interested in that… you can look it up on the internets. My quick definition is simply this: A geek is someone who is into computers (sofware… hardware… whateva), blogging, memorizing movie lines (I’ve debated this one and given in), waiting in lines at midnight for the latest <insert craze here>, and so on and so forth. A nerd… again in MY definition… is simply a geek that is socially inept.

So, by that definition, I’m totally geekalicious. As a part of coming into my geekness I’ve decided to try new things… allow myself to fully embrace my geeknocity (I know, bare with me, I enjoy making up words… GEEK!).

I played World of Warcraft with my co-workers for couple months. They made fun of me becuase I had never really played any games like that before and had no idea how to move my character around. I also got more excited when I learned how to make my character dance (she did the Macarena!) and flirt than I did actually moving up in levels. I finally decided that WoW really wasn’t my cup of tea, however I’m happy that I gave it a shot! Now at least when they make references to WoW on “Big Bang Theory” I totally know what they’re talking about!

I have also recently become more engaged and interested in SEO and how as a developer I can actually accomplish the recommendations by our in-house SEO. It’s one thing to know the WHAT… but it’s completely different to know the HOW. A couple weeks ago I went to the SMX Advanced Developer’s day. I met some geek rock stars (I’m not a name dropper so I won’t go into specifics). I met the Google guy, a couple Microsoft guys, the SEOmoz guy… and mom and a bunch of other very cool, highly knowledable people. I really look forward to continuing to gain more and more knowledge and helping to “spread the word” to the rest of my team.

Ok. This is enough “geek” for tonight. Eva is with Rudy so I’ve stayed up much later than I normally would. Time to get some rest though, that sweet little smile will be here firs thing tomorrow morning.

So… this is my first post. I’m keeping the title that WordPress used because it nicely conveys exactly what I want to say. Hello world! I have no idea who will read this, or even why they would want to. I suppose I feel the need to keep track of my own thoughts better, and perhaps this is the way. We shall see. Let’s get on with the show!

I had my first guitar lesson tonight. This is the absolute first time in my life I’ve even attempted to play a musical instrument. Sounds odd right? Everyone’s parents forced them to play the cello or learn the flute… well not mine! We did have a piano for a short time period and I would bang on it, but I never learned (nor did I attempt to actually learn) to play.

It was fun! But I realize now it’s going to take a lot of work, and a nail clipper. *sigh* I’m not much of a girlie girl, but I do have long nails. It’s not like I worry about my nails and primp all over them all the time. But they just get in the way. I already keep my thumbnails cut… why? you ask… one word: crackberry (hence… jengeek). Pretty lame. But that’s the way it goes.

Anyway, I’m well on my way now to being as bad-ass as Gabriela (of Rodrigo y Gabriela). haha yea right. She’s my hero! I’ll never play like that… But a girl can dream.
